Bring it inside immediately
Let’s think about why cats bury their waste in the wild. It’s a natural survival instinct—cats do this to avoid attracting attention from territorial cats or predators. Their waste carries strong scent markers, and leaving it exposed can put them at risk.
When you place a litter box outside, you're not just signaling to your cat—you're broadcasting a powerful scent to the entire neighborhood. This can attract:
Other territorial cats, which may drive your cat further away out of fear or conflict.
Predators, who may see your cat as prey if they follow the scent trail.
Instead, the safest and most effective way to leave a scent trail for your cat is to place worn clothing or fabric with your scent outside. Your cat knows your scent and is comforted by it—this can help guide them home without drawing unwanted attention from other animals.
🚫 Do not put your cat’s litter box outside.
It does more harm than good, and in some cases, it can make the situation much worse.
Stick with using your scent, not your cat's, to help them find their way back safely.
