IN THIS LESSON

The real search begins

At this point, you’ve built a strong foundation for your search. Now, it’s time to shift your mindset: you’re not just looking for your cat—you’re marketing them.

Why? Because grabbing attention in today’s world is hard. People scroll fast, glance quickly, and forget even faster. Your job is to stand out and stay top of mind in your community.

The good news? I’ll walk you through effective, affordable strategies—no matter your budget.

📏 Start Close to Home: The 250-Foot Rule

In the early days, your cat is most likely hiding within a few hundred feet of your home. I recommend drawing a 250-foot radius around your property using this free mapping tool.

  • Save the map and use it as your checklist.

  • Visit every home within that circle—introduce yourself, hand out a flyer, and ask if they’ve seen your cat.

  • After covering the initial area, expand outward by 100 feet at a time.

  • Keep going as far as you're able—you cannot talk to too many people.

📢 Flyers: Your Most Valuable Tool

Printed flyers are one of the most effective tools in your search. The next lesson will discuss how to make a high quality free flyer. Here's how to approach them:

  • Color flyers are ideal for visibility and recognition.

  • Black & white is absolutely fine if that’s what your budget allows.

  • Libraries often offer low-cost printing.

  • For larger quantities, check online bulk print shops—many offer next-day shipping at a very low per-copy cost. Choose a vendor near you to get them faster.

🔑 Your Neighbors Are the Key

The single most important thing you can do is talk directly to your neighbors. No app, website, or post can replace a face-to-face conversation.

  • People are far more likely to remember your cat if they’ve heard you talk about them.

  • Many lost cats have been found thanks to a neighbor checking a camera, a shed, or under a deck after being asked in person.

🔁 Quick Recap:

  • Treat this as a marketing mission—visibility is everything.

  • Use a 250-foot radius as your starting point.

  • Talk to every house—expand your search area gradually.

  • Print and post flyers everywhere you can.

  • Engage your community directly and kindly—your neighbors want to help, they just need to know.
