Microchip Basics: Don’t Skip This Step
If your cat has a microchip, it could be the fastest way to bring them home—but only if the information is current.
🚨 What to Do First
Contact the microchip company immediately
Let them know your pet is missing.
Confirm that your contact information is up to date.
If you don’t remember the company, use this microchip lookup tool to find out who to call.
💾 Update your records
If your contact info has changed (phone number, address, email), the chip company won’t be able to reach you if your pet is found.
Be sure to update both your personal details and any emergency contacts on file.
🐱 If Your Cat Was Adopted From a Shelter or Rescue
Many shelters microchip pets at the time of adoption.
The organization may still be listed as a secondary contact, and they might receive a call if your cat is scanned.
Reach out to them directly to:
Confirm the chip number
Ensure your contact info is the primary one on file
📛 Important Note: Don’t Rely Solely on a Microchip
Microchips can move inside the body, especially if your cat has lost weight.
Some shelters and finders may not scan thoroughly or at all.
Never assume the chip alone will bring your cat home—keep checking local shelters yourself.
💛 No Microchip? Don’t Beat Yourself Up
Microchips are inexpensive and quick for a vet or experienced tech to implant.
Once your kitty is back home safe, you can easily add one as part of their safety plan moving forward.
